History

Lison de Caunes is largely responsible for the revival of interest in straw marquetry, a French tradition using rye straw that dates back to the 17th century, and which was the passion of her grandfather, the famous Andre Groult. Mme de Caunes began her career by dedicating herself restoring antiques and Art Deco. She launched Lison de Caunes Création in 2015, where she dedicates her craft to the creation of furniture, wall panels and objects for interior designers and decorators. Savoir-Faire

History

The straw marquetry technique is close to wood marquetry. In the 17th century, Marquetry was the preserve of inleyers, clergymen, sailors and convicts. It gave birth to a very rich handcraft, especially in France. Straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, chen the most prestigious decorators returned this art to its former glory.

Material

The material used is rye straw, the same kind used for chair reseating. It is cultivated and harvested old style in Burgundy, France. The straw is dried and dyed then opened and flattened in the workshop. It has a naturalsilica polish that makes it impermeable and resistant. The maintenance only requires wax. Lison de Caunes is known for her use of vibrant and bright colors, sometimes in a very complementary way of color matching, which makes every piece an eye catcher.

The workshops

The workshops produce Lison de Caunes’ creations and collaborate with famous interior designers for private requests mainly in the United States. The workshops are also entrusted with the restoration of ancient objects.
