Straw Marquetry

Lison de Caunes is largely responsible for the revival of interest in straw marquetry, a French tradition using rye straw that dates back to the 17th century, and which was the passion of her grandfather. Mme. de Caunes began her career by dedicating herself to restoration projects and soon became a professional with the result to starting her own company.

The technique is close to wood marquetry. In the 17th century Marquetry inlayers, clergymen, sailors and convicts used it, and it gave birth to a very rich handicraft especially in France. Straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, when the most prestigious decorators returned this art to its former glory.

The straw used is rye straw (the same kind used for chair reseating). It is cultivated and harvested old style in Burgundy (France). The straw is dried and dyed then opened and flattened in the workshop. It has a natural silica polish that makes it impermeable and resistant. The maintenance only requires wax.

Today, straw marquetry is gaining a place in 21st century design, with custom contemporary furniture, accessories, murals and wall panels created by Lison de Caunes appearing in the interiors of Peter Marino, Jean-Louis Deniot, and Frank de Biasi among other clients. Lison is an authority on the technique and has published two books on the subject.

Lison de Caunes is know for her use of vibrant and bright colors, sometimes in a very complementary way of color matching, which makes every piece an eye catcher.
